Can A Christian Therapeutic Boarding School Help Struggling Teens?

By Saleem Rana

The Founder and Executive Director of Advent Home Learning Center, Tennessee, Dr. Blondel Senior was interviewed by radio host Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio about how a Christian therapeutic boarding school has a different way of helping adolescents than a secular therapeutic boarding school.

Background: Dr. Blondel Senior and Advent Home learning Center

Dr. Blondel Senior has about 40 years working with at-risk teens. He founded his Christian therapeutic boarding school in 1985. Advent Home learning Center, Inc. is an all-male, 6th-12th grade boarding school in Calhoun, Tennessee. The school is classified as an alternative institution, has a Christian religious affiliation, and is located in a beautiful rural setting.

Advent Home Learning Center offers remedial school, lifestyle modifications and improved health for at-risk boys. It serves at-risk boys with ADHD, scholastic, emotional and behavior issues who take part in a 9 to 36 month intervention program.

The school also helps 18-22 year old young men to pass their GED and complete high school. It helps them in academic preparation for university or a career. These older boys participate in a five to twelve month opportunity to build academic and life skills.

How A Christian Therapeutic Boarding School Can Make A World Of Difference

At the beginning of the interview, Dr Senior described exactly why his Christian-oriented schools was so successful in helping kids develop physically, psychologically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Marvelous changes in behavior were due to three principle aspects: devoted Christian teachers and staff, a calming country environment, and a very organized therapeutic and academic routine.

The staff workers follow Christ's role model of compassion and patience and provide the boys a lot more attention than they would get in a secular school. There is greater attention to each individual, more personal coaching, and smaller groups. Furthermore, teachers and staff often put in additional hours to assist struggling adolescents.

The environment, too, is conducive to healing because of the vast acres of green grass and the expansive open sky that lights up with stars at night. Out in nature, away from the distractions of inner city chaos, children are soothed by the beautiful flora and fauna, appreciating the natural landscape, the presence of birds and animals, and the abundant plant life. In addition, a healthy vegan-based diet, plenty of exercise living in fresh, open spaces restores their sense of well-being.

Finally, the Christian therapeutic boarding school has a highly structured daily regimen, and discipline and practical Christian virtues are regularly implemented. Gradually, the children quit their belligerence and begin to appreciate the security of a structured regimen.

Conclusion

Advent Home Learning Center enjoys a 93 percent success rate, with the majority of the participants finishing high school, holding down jobs, getting married, and living successfully. This is a huge turnaround from the rebellious and belligerent attitude they showed when they first arrived at this Christian therapeutic boarding school.
