Travelling During Pregnancy

By Gardelee Benandanio

There are times when you are pregnant that you must travel out of necessity, this is not often a complicated issue, however your physician should be consulted before making the decision to go ahead and travel. If the pregnancy is one that is at risk or considered to be at risk, then naturally your doctor will advise you not to go on an aircraft. In fact, there are many airlines that have a policy forbidding anyone to travel on their airplanes if they are in the final month of pregnancy. They won't let you on board unless your doctor actually verifies in writing that it is okay for you to travel but most doctors will not give you permission to travel after 36 weeks because you could have your baby at anytime.

During pregnancy you need to ask your doctor about any test he or she may need to perform before and make sure you create a plan to work out your travel around these tests.

So take along a copy of your prenatal chart. This chart should have your age, your (LMP) last menstrual period, it should list any allergies you may have, all your previous test results, your blood pressure results, urine test results, your surgical and medical history. You will need to make sure you have listed your emergency contacts outside and within the area you are visiting. The next step will then be to pack all the medications you will need to have for any ailments you possess and don't forget to pack your vitamins especially folic acid which is vital during pregnancy.

So you see why it is important to take along your prenatal chart. Your chart will contain information about your last menstrual period and the results of several test that are routine in pregnancy, such as your blood pressure results, urine test results, your blood work results and your complete medical and surgical history, as well as if you are allergic to any medication.

It might not be such a good idea to take them out of their original package as when you go through customs they might search your hand luggage and you want it to be clear that these are in fact prescription medications. Invest in some travel insurance as well, you never know if you might need it.
