Parenting Your Teenager From The Inside Out: Five Questions To Ask Yourself

By Paul G Saver

Life has often been compared to a journey. The parent teenager relationship component of the journey is arguably one of the most challenging for both parties alike. The potential for stalemate or breakdown on any part of the road, is a reality that cannot be ignored without serious consequences. That might sound a little alarmist. Perhaps a more common scenario is a relationship that just ain't going anywhere.

As dramatic as it might sound, sometimes a complete melt down of your parent teenager relationship is best compared to a relationship that is not too bad but not appealing either. In the latter scenario, complacency is almost inevitable which could be a recipe for a relationship disaster waiting to happen. In the former scenario, the resultant shock and pain, can drive a parent to take action.

Whilst you may have great hopes and expectations of your teenager, the truth is that, the only person you can change is yourself.

To assist you on your parent teenager relationship journey, so that you don't end up with a boring or broken relationship, check these five critical questions.

Question One. What are your three most important strengths as a parent?

Question Two. What are your three worst behaviors as a parent?

Question Three. Of all your teenagers bad habits, what is their worst behavior that causes you to want to give them a 'red card'?

Question Four. What will you choose to do next time when you feel like the 'red card' is coming?

Question Five. What three action steps could you take that would help your teenager to grow their personality?

Oftentimes in life, when you want to make improvements, you simply change your perspective. By tweaking the way you look at yourself, others and the situation, change becomes natural and even effortless. The same is true in developing your parent teenager relationship. It need not be a lost cause or hell on Earth. In fact it can be deeply meaningful, rewarding, wonderful and a chunk of heaven on Earth.
