Classroom Organization Ideas And Helps

By Celia Hall

Maintaining a neat environment is important for scholastic success for the students. A good way to help provide this positive type of environment is to use some classroom organization ideas that will help keep all necessary materials like books, crafting items and math and other manipulatives easily accessible. Being organized helps save time for the teacher which he or she can then use to instruct students.

Having books readily available will help kids develop a passion for reading and have the ability to look-up information quickly and easily. Of course children can go to the library to check-out books, but is also nice to have some books that can be read during quiet reading time in class. Consider organizing a book station with the same system used in the school library or develop a unique system that groups books by the subjects learned in that class or by the first letter in the title. Add a sign giving students directions on how to use the system and provide enough light and a comfy chair for students who want to read.

Bulletin boards provide a visual aid where teachers can display inspirational quotes and pictures and can communicate thoughts, ideas and introduce new units of study. It's important to have a space where the teacher can organize wall stickers and other decorative elements often used in creating these large displays. Teachers should consider keeping small elements such as letters in small plastic food storage bags, put into hanging files and larger pieces might fit nicely above cabinets or in large drawers.

Providing a way for students to organize their personal belongings while at school will help to keep the room tidy. Encourage children to keep their desks neat and cleared-out, leaving room for school supplies and free of toys and other distractions. Have hooks and cubicles where students can put their coats and backpacks in and provide labels so each student knows exactly where his or her belongings go.

Crafting areas are often really messy due to the frequency of use and the number of items that are found there. Provide enough storage space so the items can be separated into individual compartments and put labels on them so they can be looked through easily. For example, have a different container for small pom poms, Popsicle sticks and similar crafting items.

The teacher's personal desk is central and critical for the overall success of the learning and teaching experience. It's good to have one that has drawers where files can be kept. It's also nice if there is an organizer on the top where papers can be sorted along with pencil holders and a bulletin board on the back or side that can display decorative items, inspirational saying, reminders or other important papers.

Teachers should think about keeping specific files in their desk. Most keep general files with tests and other written materials, but they should also consider keeping on for each student that can hold their correspondance with the parents and other pertinent information. This will be a handy tool when the parents come in for their meetings at school.

Classroom organization ideas help teachers do their job to the best of their ability which benefits their students. There are a number of different ways to organize each part of the room. Teachers should experiment with tried and true methods and some unique ideas until they find the methods that work the best.
