Is Home Tuition Necessary?

By Mary Firestone

Home tuition or enrichment lessons after school, three days per week. Heard this before? That's the lifestyle for many school children in Singapore in present day. We've placed a high significance with an education with brand name schools and excellent grades. It is in hope it will probably result in excellent careers, wages etc. Intensive competitiveness in society comes to a point where by it is no longer a luxury to have private home tuition.

Is home tuition essential? Necessity or not depends on the individual's motivations, capabilities not to mention, parents. We want what exactly is good for our kids, hoping that he/she will be a top student and perform better in life compared to us. It's understandable to push our children through home tuition and extra classes. The question is... how much is too much?

It's a thin line between having home tuition that's advantageous and getting too tough on the child. If overdone, our kids may feel over depleted by these supplemental activities and weary in their academics. It eliminates their particular interests in getting knowledge and instead, are forced to embark on rote learning to do well in tests. Overloading them with lessons three to five times a week would not make them brilliant immediately. As an alternative, it's about employing a measured approach to their learning and providing tuition as a guidance and especially, sparingly.

Tuition need to be utilized as being a tool to supplement what has been taught in class or even enforce a little bit self-control in our children. It'll be necessary for weaker students who want more guidance in their school work. A private tutor can help instill discipline in our kids to finish class work on time. If a student has the ability to cope well with the school curriculum, home tuition is not a necessity. A superior student should be offered opportunities to pursue activities that he/she like and be given sufficient room to develop themselves.

Let them discover their surroundings and play while they're young. This gives them unforgettable experiences which will be meaningful for them. Our children will likely be thankful to us for that.

Looking back at our education, we didn't rely on home tuition nearly as much as it is currently. Have times changed? Has competition increased? Times definitely have changed considering how our nation has transformed into a knowledge-based economy in which human capital is our only useful resource. Competition has increased as we have become a global metropolis and an ideal location for expatriates to build their career. The education stakes are already upped many folds and failure is not an option. Having said that, there are many aspects to life than simply being a top student and getting the best job. Take into consideration that and weigh our life priorities. Tuition is a crucial part of our education system but it certainly is not a need as recognized by many.
