Interview by Lon Woodbury
Gary Hees, Clinical Director at Spring Ridge Academy, which is a Therapeutic Boarding School for girls in Arizona, spoke with Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio about the various therapeutic modalities that Spring Ridge Academy found most effective for at-risk adolescent girls.
About Gary Hees and Spring Ridge Academy
Gary Hees, who is in charge of the Administration of the Arizona Behavioral Health Services licensure held by Spring Ridge Academy and the Mental Health elements of the program, is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Arizona and Texas. He holds an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Houston and his substantial therapeutic experiences include individual and family therapy work, leadership in personal growth workshops, and creating a sense of direction for public, personal and academic programs.
Spring Ridge Academy's all-girl Therapeutic Boarding School program serves students ages 13 - 17 in grades 9 - 12. The program has three distinct but interrelated features: an empowering emotional growth program; a carefully-designed, multi-disciplinary therapeutic approach; and a vigorous college prep curriculum. In addition, the school's philosophy is to approach the entire issue of intervention and healing as a process that involves the entire family.
What Are Some New Therapeutic Approaches?
Spring Ridge Academy works successfully with a large variety of young women. Upon registration, young students are frequently dealing with a range of issues. Some are handling academic issues like low grades, low motivation and underachievement. Others are handling learning disability concerns like ADD and ADHD. And yet others are dealing with psychological ailments like grief, loss and anxiousness, entitlement, hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Behavioral issues are common. They include issues like computer system addiction and technology dependence, defiance, sexual indiscrimination, and manipulation. These scholastic, emotional, and behavioral problems, frequently reveal emotional problems like eating disorders, social problems like drug and alcohol abuse and dependence, and medical concerns like celiac condition.
Asked by Lon for a description of the ways to provide kids a psychological framework despite their oppositional habits, Gary described a number of restorative psychological modalities along with the process of monitoring and assessing their efficiency. Throughout the interview, he talked at length about EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Eriksonian Hypnosis. In addition, he described the merits of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Post Induction Therapy, Cognitive & Behavioral Therapies, Structural Family Therapy, Experiential Therapy, Insight Oriented Therapy, and Narrative Family Therapy. As Clinical Director, Gary is always on the lookout for emerging healing methods. When he finds one, he gets trained in it and then examines whether it could be made use of successfully at Spring Ridge Academy. This multi-disciplinary approach to therapeutic treatment is working effectively at Spring Ridge Academy.
