Dangerous fun-The Teen Affair With Everyday Drugs

By Jason Moses

Today's teens are more informed and have greater access to information than ever before especially with access to the Internet from the home computer to connected mobile devices. They have a wealth of information that can be accessed at the click of a button.

This is a great thing where education is concerned but it can also be a very dangerous thing especially where parents cannot control or check the kinds of information that their teens are accessing as it could be misleading or even wrong. This is especially true where the use of prescription drugs is concerned.

At different point in a teen's life he or she will be faced with decision of whether or not to try out a drug. In most cases this happens through a friend at school or at social events like birthday parties or raves where peer influence may make it seem cool to use drugs.

Due to the high cost of hard drugs and the fear of the breaking the law many teens will avoid them and instead they will opt for common drugs found around the home and look for ways in which they can get a buzz or high from using the drug.

The first place where they seek out this information is from the Internet where they are able to find thousands of sites that tell them everything from the best kinds of drugs to go for to how to use them to get the best result from the drug chosen.

Cough and cold medicine containing dxm (Dextromethorphan) are the choice prescription drugs as far as abuse is concerned. In what is known as robotripping teens ingest abnormally huge doses of dxm which results in them experiencing a distortion of reality, intoxication or even feeling high.

Dxm can be quite dangerous especially if it is mixed with other drugs such as alcohol as in this case the chances of an overdose are greatly increased. An overdose on the drug is known to cause difficulty breathing, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat and even a coma or convulsions.

Most teens will opt to abuse these and other common prescription drugs as they think they are not as bad or as harmful as other hard drugs on the street but this could not be further from the truth. These drugs are just as addictive and dangerous.

The teenage years are a quite difficult time for most kids as they try to find and define themselves. Parents may therefore find it hard to get through to them but with love and patience parents can let their kids know of the dangers of prescription drugs before they try them out for themselves.
