How Does Working Out Improve Mental Health

Physical activity is healthy for the mind and body.

People dealing with depression tend to have mood swings. Participating in physical activities is a way of dealing with the feelings and getting out the house. Many people run marathons as a way to meet people with the same interests. Symptoms of anxiety may consist of feeling lonely or isolated. Going to the gym or a group camping trip could be a way to fight feelings.

Running on the treadmill or outside at the park tend to increase serotonin levels. The chemicals releases when performing physical activities on a regular basis. Serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter that helps with brain functioning efficiently. Exercise can activate antidepressant effects in the brain that continues when not working out.

A person that is willing to stick with regular physical activity will continue to feel the antidepressant effects for several weeks. Physical activity can help males and females when dealing with psychological problems. There are a variety of options for improving conditions, such as schizophrenia, depression, anxiety or bipolar disorders.
