Don't Be Too Discouraged When Hiring A Babysitter

By David Ginelt

If stereotypical stories about babysitters make you think twice about hiring one, please reconsider your opinion. Not all baby sitters are what you see on TV.

Sure, every once in a while you may hear a babysitting horror story on the news, but just like any of these stories, they rarely occur. If you do have things about hiring a babysitter that worry you, here is a list that can help you be proactive in your choice.

Teen-age sitters are not totally responsible; they will get on the phone and not pay any attention to the children. This may be true with some, but there are many reliable teens out there who will make good sitters. It is a good idea to interview more than one.

Remember that you have many options when it comes to hiring a sitter. If you find that the thought of leaving your precious children with a teen, then think about hiring some adult or retired person. But remember that you will want to interview them also.

Don't forget to do a background check on your babysitting candidate, which anyone can have done. If you are looking for as little work as possible, consider using a babysitting agency. They screen their applicants beforehand for a shady history.

Before you ever even start to look for a sitter, you need to make sure your children know they have the right to tell you everything that happens when they are in the care of another. This way, if anything does go wrong, they are more likely to tell you. Be sure they understand that you will always listen. They may not know for sure if something is alright, but if they feel nervous about a situation, know that they can discuss it with you.

Give your babysitter the house rules and tell them they need to stick to them. Remember that yours was brought up a certain way and may be bringing some bad habits into your home without meaning to. Think about their family background when you are interviewing and checking them. Curse words, smoking, and drinking are not good habits for your babysitter to have.

The best way to be sure you do not run into problems is to hire that person whom you are most comfortable with. Thinking a problem will go away is not a good idea. There are plenty of people out there who are honest and hard-working so that you don't have to settle for someone you have doubts about.
