Being Fit is Beneficial for Everyone - Even Senior Citizens

By James Steele

You need to look at the overall picture in order to fit a serious fitness regimen into your life and get back into shape. You have to let exercise become a regular habit in your life so it will be successful. The reasoning behind this is not complicated; however it's something most people tend to overlook.

Not a week goes by without a report of someone in his or her golden years successfully performing an amazing physical accomplishment. Did you read about Fauja Singh? He's 100 years old and - even though he came in last - he is now in the Guinness Book of Records for successfully completing a marathon in Toronto in October 2011. In many different sports field, seniors over 60 years old are setting records with their accomplishments. Therefore, don't use your age as an excuse - or mental block - to not start an exercise program and become healthy and fit. As you probably already know, your health care provider must give you the green light before you begin any fitness routine and you must adapt what you do to your physical condition and age when you start. It isn't necessary to put pressure on yourself to get fit quickly. Take as much time as you need and proceed slowly and easily. Most people who work out intensely know how to recognize what their body tells them. Your body will give you continuous feedback as to what it needs and if there is a problem anywhere. It's simply a matter of paying attention to yourself. And you will be the one who benefits. By becoming aware, you can sidestep a potential injury with ease. You will also instinctively know the proper action to take. If you are experiencing pain there is damage taking place. Don't just "work through it" and cause more injury. Simply stop what you are doing. According to what your body is telling you, you should take steps to alleviate the problem or stop altogether.

Don't let your life get overly busy, or too hectic, like the majority of people do. Starting a new fitness program, when you are in this situation, probably won't happen. There certainly isn't any debate on the value regular exercise will give to your health. So, the best approach if you are busy is to fit something into your current schedule. Wherever you are at, even when you travel, you should be able to power walk. Even when you are in a hotel room for a conference, you can do calisthenics in the evening, if you didn't do them in the morning. Everybody has twenty minutes at least three times a week to do something.

It's very important to learn all you can about becoming fit. Search out information and study it until you are familiar with the principles of fitness. Learning this vital information can make all the difference in the success of your fitness regimen. But none of this is difficult to find, learn, and understand, and the benefits to you can be enormous.

Along with giving that time, it is imperative you get ample amount of much-needed sleep. When you are sleeping, your body is rebuilding and healing from your regular day, plus your exercising. Insufficient sleep can also cause you to be more injury-prone. With adequate sleep, you will start your day "bright-eyed and bushy tailed." You energy will be high and you will function better all day long. Most people don't really have an excuse for not adding a workable exercise program to their life. You have to pick a plan that works for you. At the very least, in order to follow through, you have to like what you are doing. You must be naturally attracted to any form of exercise you choose so you don't lose interest. Figure out what you like to do, visit your doctor, and then get started. Put together the gear and/or equipment you need, after you received clearance from your doctor, and then you will be able to, patiently, begin. The worst thing you can do is workout like you did when you were a teenager - that is how you get injured.
