Implementing Good Classroom Organization Ideas

By Dorothea Garner

Successful classroom organization ideas involve consistency and careful planning. Because each idea is catered around the children's age, everyone will have the ability to participate in keeping the room clean and clutter free. Most plans can be altered to meet the teacher's or the student's capabilities.

It seems children between the ages of three and seven have the most energy and are the most difficult to control. At this age, their main objective is playing with their friends. Because it is easy for situations to get out of hand, the teacher must develop an effective way to keep the class under control while allowing them to freely run around and play.

In an effort to organize the room, the teacher can set up various work/play stations around the room. Then the teacher can assign each child to a station. This technique also makes clean up easier. Older school-aged children requires more planning.

Older children require more structure. Instead of keeping track of dolls, blocks and trains, they are focus on correctly completely their assignments on time. The average child has five to seven subjects in a normal school day. Depending on the school, this number may be higher.

An organized environment allows creativity to flow freely because no one is frustrated. Because the student will know where to find the necessary supplies, the student does not have to worry about being properly prepared for a particular assignment. Keeping a copy of all assignments in a file folder helps the student to complete any work that is missing. This is extremely helpful to students who are missing school days or those who cannot find a particular assignment.

Being organized means maximizing the available space. This entails using every available shoebox, plastic containers and tissue to hold on to the easy-to-lose items such as paper clips, erasers, scissors and thumbtacks. In addition to having the ability to stack them on top of each other, they are can be stored in small confined spaces. Placing materials on a table near work areas gives the students easy access to the necessary materials.

Organized lesson plans help the students to stay on track with their work. The lesson plans also serve as a guideline that helps to track each student's progress in the class. During conferences, every teacher has the ability to pin point the student's strong points and weaknesses.

Classroom organization ideas are most effective when they are updated consistently. Because every student is different, the continuous updates help to meet the need of the growing students. Organization is also a process that requires practice everyday. In order to be ready for a busy school week on Monday, it is important that the teacher start planning on the weekend before.
