Ways to Make Your Home Safer for Your Children

By Mark Mahaffey

Many families have instances when the children need to be at home by themselves. This is often after school, because it is not uncommon for children to get off the bus before the parents get home from work. But sometimes children are at home by themselves in the early morning before school, if the parents have to leave before the school bus comes to pick up the children.

It is in your best interest to make your home as safe and secure as possible for your children, so that you do not have to worry excessively about them while they are alone. Any time, money and effort you spend ensuring that they are as safe as possible is a wise investment.

One important thing to do is to make sure that all the locks on your windows are in good condition. Window locks may not be something that you think about often, but an unlocked window is an invitation to a thief. Many thieves who break into homes simply come in through an unlocked window. Teach your children to check the windows to make sure they are locked.

Your house keys are also part of your home security strategy. It is a good idea to keep an up to date count of how many house keys that you have, so that if one gets misplaced or stolen, you will know it. If this happens, make sure that you quickly call a locksmith so that they can come and change the locks and give you a fresh set of keys.

Install a home security system. These systems often come with alerts and sensors for all doors and windows. This means that if anyone attempts to open a door or window or even break the glass, the system will sound a siren and even notify a home monitoring service if you have a contract with one. The monitoring service can then call the police.

And finally, be sure to have good smoke detectors in your home. Smoke detectors save lives. If you do not have some in your home, be sure to purchase them and have them installed. If your children are alone, they need to know as soon as possible if a fire has broken out.
