A Hip Seat Is More Comfortable And Healthier

By Leonor Rivera

There have always been a variety of ways for the mother to carry their child. No matter how this was done, one method always seemed to keep coming up. Carrying the baby on the hip was one method that was seen in every mother everywhere. It was for this reason that the hip seat was invented. It gave parents an easier way to do what they were already doing.

Essentially it is a strap that goes around your waist with a little seat for the baby's bottom. So instead of resting the baby on your hip and having to sort of lean to allow your hip to protrude out and act as a seat, the hip seat does it for you. This not only saves you energy but also your back and spine as well.

It was a logical move to go from what people were already doing to make something that would assist them in this action. By making a strap that would secure around the parents waist which would then have a cushioned seat where the baby could sit it was something that worked very well. This did great to take the weight off the mother or father.

Other contraptions that became popular over the years were the backpack or the front carrier or poncho. These did work well and many parents took to them quickly. The problem was that because they forced the weight to be in an unnatural part of your body you would get back problems later or even pain after a couple hours.

These were not exactly the best ways to carry your baby either. Carrying the kid around like a backpack might sound like a novel idea at first but when you think about it this is not exactly a great way to carry the child. For one they cannot see you and a baby at that age needs to see their parent. For two you could not see them or what they were doing.

If the baby happened to find something to put into their mouth, they could choke and you would never know it. Of course the front carrier or poncho version were much better where vision was concerned. However they forced the carrier or parent to lean forward due to the weight of the child. This would put strain on the spine and back muscles.

When the new hip method was used with the assistance of the seat there was nothing to worry about. Not the baby or the parent would be put into an uncomfortable position and the baby would not suffer any chafing or pain in any way because the only thing holding onto them would be the mother's arms.

The use of the hip seat made it much easier for the mom or dad to carry the baby without putting strain on themselves. Added features started being designed into them as well as time went on. Zippered pouches for carrying bottles or other necessities as well as pockets on the other side as well. In time they became quite handy.
