How To Unlock Your Child's Genius For Schooling Families

By David Simon

It was the year 1994 when I wrote the book, How to Unlock Your Child's Genius, a book that would become an important text for many homeschooling families. The book was based on my many years of working as an independent educationalist and author where I ran my own Saturday schools at the weekends, and my working as a learning specialist during the day. Soon after the publication of the book I would sell thousands of copies at conferences, churches, schools and bookshops.

I had no idea that the book would have such an impact, especially when I started on my long journey on becoming an educationalist, when, back in 1987 I rented a run down youth club that stank of beer and marijuana as it had been used at for a rave the previous night. However, the knowledge of teaching disadvantaged children for so many years at weekends, at my Saturday school, and working as a learning specialist in London for the next twenty odd years gave me a body an expertise and skills on how to develop children holistically by putting the family at the centre of the learning experience.

After a few years I had assembled a group of teachers who understood my method of education based on the eleven steps and I how had a network of Saturday schools. The system of education that I had developed included ares such as diet and learning, how children learn to read and understand mathematics, cultural literacy, educational management in the home, financial literacy, leadership and mind games and family learning. I was now being contacted by many homeschooling families who wanted a holistic approach to their own homeschool.

So now I found myself advising families on how best to homeschool their children or to set up a part-time homeschooling system within the home. Sadly I found that most families had little idea on how to homeschool their child or children and many didn't even plan to homeschool their children but had no option as they had to withdraw their child from school due to extreme bullying, racism or for academic reasons. All of this meant that my book had become the bible for many homeschooling families.

And what were these newly trained parent-teachers able to achieve? They could now confidently unlock the genius of their children with this method; they could organise their homes as places of creative learning, they could programme their home with resources, pictures, thoughts and expectations of success. Suddenly they realised that great learning is when a family goes on a journey together and that the greatest learning, which is true education, is from within.
