The Right Type Of Fishing Lights To Use

By Casandra Newton

Fishermen make their work easier by using fishing lights in their profession. Light attractors are used to attract fish and other water animals so that they can be harvested easily. The attractors are positioned either above the water surface or underneath it. The color of the light is an important factor when using the attractor.

Small fish are concentrated where there is plenty of food to feed on. Bigger fish look for small fish and insects to feed on. To get fish a fisherman looks for the environment which is conducive for the fish and they are bound to be found in large numbers.

Research has proven that eyes of most animals that live in water are sensitive to blue and green colors. Fish spend their entire life in water which is mostly either greenish or bluish to the eyes. When the environment in the water is filled with minute particulate matter the water tends to appear blue. If the water has nutrients, plants as well as photosynthetic organisms then water in the green region of the spectrum is scattered. Photosynthetic organisms and plants absorb red from the spectrum and thus green is scattered.

Many people know that light can be used to attract fish but they do not know the best kind of light that should be used. Science proves that the best colors are green or blue because the visual receptors of the water animals are attracted to this colors most. Fishing lights are mostly made to be these two colors.

Light from other colors can also be used as long as they are very intense. White light is also effective because it has a portion of energy in the green and blue region. To attract fish from a long way the light needs to have a high intensity. It should also be portable and submersible.

There are kinds of fishing lights. There are those that can be carried and those that are fixed in one place. Portable attractors use energy from batteries to operate. This means the light is on for a short duration and it is also of low intensity. The most popular portable attractor is an incandescent headlight which uses 12 volts. However a fluorescent lamp converts electricity to light in a more efficient manner.

Permanent attractors require 115 volts to light up and they are usually fixed on poles at the pier. It is advisable to use permanent attractors for many days in a row. This is important to attract big fish which take a considerable amount of time before realizing where smaller fish which are attracted to the light are concentrated. After getting used to a schedule the fish will keep coming regularly to the same area where the light is fixed.

One problem of using light attractors is the water reflection. This reduces the amount of light penetrating through to the water for fish to notice. Aluminum foils can be used to solve this problem. Submersible lights can also be used because they avail twice as much light when they are underneath the surface. Precaution should be taken to ensure the equipment is not damaged and an electrical shock does not occur.
