How Common Core Standards Kindergarten Math Will Revolutionize Learning

By Patrice McCoy

Developed by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices or NGA Center and Council of Chief State School Officer the Common Core Standards Kindergarten Math was setup to aid students in preparing themselves for after high school life. This is no matter whether they proceed on to college or plunge into the workforce. They have especially been put in place to assess the mathematical skills of children as they prepare for graduation into the first grade.

The standard created are internationally bench marked hence the United State's education will compare favorably with the rest of the world's academics standards. This standard was created in 2009 and debuted in 2010 and most states are expected to fully start implementing it in the period of 2014 to 2015. Below is some of what pre-grade children should know before proceeding on to the first grade.

It is pertinent that they are able perceive that the numbers they learn in school can and are used out of the classroom. They should be able to count all the way from one through to one hundred without missing a number and in the correct order and choose a number from the number line when asked to pick one. They also have the ability to clearly differentiate between tens and ones.

Children are in a position to answer questions pertaining to the number of items by quickly counting them that are placed on a surface. In the same breath, they should tell and count the number if one or two items were added or removed from those on the table and correctly identify if they are similar to what the teacher has stated. All these are important in building a foundation for future math problems in junior school.

Children should be in a position to spot the differences between numbers and carry some basic arithmetic like addition and subtraction. They should have practical examples through which they can demonstrate their newly learnt skills as well as how they understand how it works. One can use empty jars and the like for such demonstrations.

It is prudent that before they can be graduated that they have an understanding of the differences between the numbers from one to nineteen and can tell the ones from the tens. They should be able to identify numbers from a pile if asked to pick one of them. It is vital that they can aptly describe objects by their dimensions like height and width.

A child should have the ability to hold conversations on the length, and or width of an item and understand that the number zero means that there is no item to count and probably means there is emptiness. Conversations are used to check the comprehension of the basics as well as the ability to expound more on the concepts. A good example is how many children it takes to fill the drawing table.

The criterion discussed above is important to make sure that the kids have learnt basic concepts that will be required in elementary school as well as later in life. The common core standards kindergarten math tools are used to teach the necessary skill sets that are absolutely necessary for the children to attain education that can stand up among equals in other countries. They are measurable and hold the teacher and students accountable.
