Why Self Made Baby Quilts Are Better For Your Child

By Alyssa McCall

For the mothers out there, having your childs crib laid with velvety and cozy baby quilts is the greatest love you can show to kids. Young tots not only enjoy the warmth of the covers but they also delight in the beautiful patterns drawn on the fabric and its sponginess which is the perfect feeling for a snooze. Baby covers are a special way to welcome you unborn baby and a gift of warmth in the crib or the child troller.

As most parents out there do, shopping for a toddler comforter is the first thing that always comes to mind. However as an excited mum you can decide to do things a little differently; how about stitching your own comforters and you can save yourself the money on spending for ready-made products. On top of that, there are certain advantages you get from DIY baby comforters than from off-the-shelf ones.

Mothers who knit their own baby covers definitely enjoy the freedom of trying out customized patterns. Some will argue that there is just about enough patterns to purchase in the market, however sometimes you may want something unique only to yourself. This is the best time to take out a pencil and make a few sketches of what you plan to knit and even add some color to see how pretty the end product will be like.

On the other hand, if it is your first time to try and make your toddler comforters, then you will need to start from simple and advance to hard. Go with simple patterns on the comforters before you can be confident enough to try something complex like knitting image patterns. There is plenty of online tutorials and ideas on how to do a neat comforter that looks professionally done.

Another thing to consider as you stitch your own toddler comforter is the gender of the tot. For a male young one, you will stitch up patterns relating to toy cars, starships, automobiles, pups and so on. For a young lady, the patterns will center on fancy items like dolls, balls, flowers or candy; some patterns like teddy bears are considered neutral and are perfect for both a male or female tot.

More on patterns, you can fetch your ideas from magazines, newspapers or you can hit on Google and view the awesome patterns you can try. Just make sure that every pattern you choose can easily be stitched or knit by following the instructions carefully. Rely on video tutorials if you can because visuals always give you the right direction.

Enough of the pattern designs, now what you need to be thinking about is the right size for the toddler you have. A baby that is about to be born is usually tiny and thus will need a small toddler comforter to be wrapped in. When the baby grows, you will have to stitch a bigger child comforter especially when they are graduating to the crib.

You can also measure the crib size to determine just what fits and what does not. And while at it you can chose the comforter color to match or compliment the crib or the toddlers room. Do not rely on purchase all the time, let your tots know just how much mummy loves them buy knitting their own special baby quilts.
