Interview by Lon Woodbury

Dr. Robert Melillo who is the co-founder of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers and the Brain Balance Program spoke to radio host Lon Woodbury, CEO of Strugglingteens.com, on L.A. Talk Radio show about how his work is helping parents of autistic children find ways to address autism, as well as ADHD, Dyslexia, and Asperger's Syndrome.

Background

Dr. Robert Melillo is a recognized worldwide as an expert speaker, author, instructor, clinician and researcher in the field of learning disorders. He is also a professional in neurology, recovery, neuropsychology and neurobehavioral disorders in children. As one of the founders of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers, he utilizes a multi-modal approach to assist children with ADHD, dyslexia, Autism, Asperger's, Tourette's, and other neurobehavioral impairments.

Dr. Melillo has now written no less than three books for parents on brain imbalances in children. The first two books were "Disconnected Kids" and "Reconnected Kids." Now his third publication, "Autism: The Scientific Truth About Preventing, Diagnosing, and Treating Autism Spectrum Disorders-- and What Parents Can Do Now," is available in bookstores.

Renewed Hope for Parents of Autistic Children:

The interview discussed recent discoveries in understanding Autism, many of which are helping to establish a completely new view about Autism and its treatment.

There is a growing body of evidence to indicate that the steady increase in autism seems to be primarily due to environmental causes. "We are seeing significant increases," explained Dr. Melillo, "which means that the only way you can explain it is through environmental factors."

Even accounting for the rise in improved diagnosis and a change in the classification of diagnostic criteria, the increase in autism and other learning disorders has increased at a significant pace.

Dr. Melillo provided a clear description behind the causes of the increase in Autism and also provided a thoughtful analysis of a scientifically-based method for prevention and treatment. He recommended several important steps for parents to avoid having children with Autism. He outlined pre-conception and pre-natal preparation by future parents as well as recommended early diagnosis to enable correct intervention.

It was no longer possible to simply make a spontaneous decision to have a child. While two years back, the chance of having a kid with Autism was 1 in 10,000, now it is more than 1 in 10. Numerous causes of Autism could be prevented by keeping tabs on biomarkers and considering a preparation period by a woman before pregnancy that included stress-reduction, exercise, and proper nutrition.

Since disorders like ADHD, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Tourette's Syndrome, PDD-NOS, and Dyslexia revealed striking similarities, these learning disorders are now considered points on a typical spectrum. Where the kid falls on the spectrum is dependent on the seriousness of the imbalance and the particular areas effected within the brain.

Besides a discussion of his work in diagnosing, treating, and preventing Autism and his work in assisting parents of autistic children deal with an extremely challenging condition, the meeting included a discussion on the difference between the brains of men and women, exactly how Autism often caused both gifts and deficits, and the appropriate place of a medical diagnosis in helping those with Autism.
